NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTRUCTION OF ARMENIA

University with a 100-Year History

BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES MUST BE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL

The first course of the project “Creating a Favorable Environment and Ecosystem for the Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Armenia and the Implementation of Inclusion Programs for Persons with Disabilities” was held jointly in NUACA by the United Nations Population Fund and the “Full Life” NGO for future specialists with the aim of ensuring stable mechanisms in the educational system by introducing appropriate subjects.

A group of students of the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Design attended the meeting to become familiar with the basic principles, the implementation of which will ensure the accessibility of the future buildings and structures they design to everyone, especially those with disabilities. Suren Maghakyan, an expert in disability studies and the President of “Full Life” NGO with a focus on the promotion of an inclusive society, was the speaker of the meeting.

The Republic of Armenia passed the RA Law “On the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” and related by-laws in 2021, which establishes at the legislative level that buildings, structures, public spaces, services, and products, should be as accessible as possible for all people in Armenia, regardless of whether they have a disability or not. In other words, the universal accessibility of buildings and an inclusive environment can be achieved both through universal design at the design stage, and through intelligent adaptation to the existing environment.

In general, about 150 fourth-year students of NUACA Faculty of Architecture and Faculty of Design will take part in the program.
