University with a 100-Year History
On May 3-5, on the initiative of the Faculty of Computer Science and Statistics of the Armenian State University of Economics, in cooperation with the East Asia Center at the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau, Germany an international conference entitled “Armenia and “The Belt and Road” Initiative: Challenges and Problems” was held. The conference was funded by “Volkswagen Foundation”.
The official opening ceremony took place on May 3 in “Ani Grand Hotel”, which was attended by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the RArmenia Viktor Richter, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Armenia Fan Yong, project coordinator Ralph Wrobel, ASUE Rector Diana Galoyan, international relation specialists, diplomats, representatives of international institutions, and ASUE scientist-lecturers.
Architect Armen Minassian participated in the conference on behalf of National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia, delivering a lecture on “Iran-Armenia Cooperation. “The Belt and Road” Initiative as an Opportunity for Regional Cooperation”.
Welcoming the conference participants, Ralph Wrobel, Professor at the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau, spoke about the significance and opportunities of “The Belt and Road” project in the context of military-political instability, unresolved conflicts, and new geopolitical realities. “It is a great pleasure for me to be here. I would like to extend my gratitude to ASUE for its initiative in organizing the conference at a high level, and also to “Volkswagen Foundation” for its support. I hope our goals will be fully achieved” said Ralph Wrobel.
ASUE Rector Diana Galoyan welcomed the organizers and participants of the conference, emphasizing the importance of the conference as an effective platform for exchange of ideas, progress of science, economic development and reform. “Our cooperation with the University of Zwickau has a history of years, we have implemented various important projects together, and I hope this conference will be the reflection of our continuous cooperation. It is especially important from the point of view of the internationalization of our University, as well as from the point of view of the development and progress of economic thought,” said Diana Galoyan.
According to the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Republic of Armenia Viktor Richter, the organization of the conference is a vivid example of academic cooperation: “Germany is also interested in this project, and we attach great importance to this initiative. I am confident that it will open wide opportunities for regional cooperation before Armenia as well.”
Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Armenia Fan Yong briefly presented “The Belt and Road” or so-called “The New Silk Road” program, emphasized the importance and significance of the project, and touched upon the investments and goals of the Government of China with the aim of infrastructure development in the region. “China and Armenia are ancient countries, ready to overcome all difficulties. I appreciate your active efforts to deepen bilateral relations with China, especially at the level of scientific contacts. Our main goal is to create mutually beneficial cooperation, deepen friendly relations with Armenia, and to turn this into a project of development and happiness,” emphasized the Ambassador.
It should be noted that “The Belt and Road” project is an infrastructure development and investment strategy approved by the Government of China, the purpose of which is to deepen commercial, investment and infrastructure ties between China and 65 countries in the region. The program envisages the creation of 6 main land and sea corridors connecting China to Europe and different parts of the Eurasian continent.
