HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PROFESSOR!

Today is the 90th anniversary of the Head of the Chair of Construction Mechanics of National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Academician of NAS RA Eduard Khachiyan.

Khachiyan is a world-renowned scholar in the fields of applied earthquake science, earthquake-resistant construction, structural dynamics, and vibration theory. In the years of the Soviet Union, and especially after Spitak earthquake, he specialized in the science of earthquakes. After the independence of Armenia, he devoted himself with renewed energy to the development and further improvement of national norms of earthquake-resistant construction. Along the way, he studied examples and developed norms of different countries.

Under his supervision in 2020, the norms of “Earthquake-Resistant Construction” were updated and radically revised, which put forward more precise and modern requirements for designers. Professor E. Khachiyan participated in dynamic tests and scientific researches of large bridges, important structures and high-rise buildings constructed within the territory of the Republic. He and his colleagues presented new ideas for strengthening existing buildings.

In addition to his scientific activities, Eduard Khachiyan passed his experience and knowledge to the new generation as a lecturer and a Head of Chair.

The outstanding scientist, who devoted his professional life to the issues of earthquake-resistant construction, is the author of more than 300 scientific works, including books, monographs, and articles published in prestigious journals in various countries.

The services of the scientist have always been highly appreciated both in Armenia and abroad. E. Khachiyan was awarded with the “Sign of Honor” former USSR Order, The Medal of “Anania Shirakatsi”, the Prime Minister’s Commemorative Medal, a Medal of the RA Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Gold Medal for “Substantial Contribution to Urban Development” of the RA Urban Development Committee in 2021, and “Argishti I” insignia of Yerevan Municipality on the occasion of the Construction Worker’s Day in 2023.

In 2011, he was awarded with the Honorary Title of Honored Worker of Science of the Republic of Armenia. In 2003, his “Applied Seismology” monograph was awarded with the RA Presidential award. The Biographical Center of Cambridge University included E. Khachiyan in the list of “100 Best Scientists” in this field in 2009. He became the laureate of the “Stars of Commonwealth” Interstate CIS Award in 2021. On the occasion of his 90th anniversary, Khachiyan was also awarded with a certificate by the Intergovernmental Council for Cooperation in Construction Activities of the CIS countries.

Eduard Khachiyan is an active member of the Scientific and Technical Council under the Chairmanship of the Chairman of the Urban Development Committee, who supports the solution of sectoral issues with his professional opinion.

We congratulate Eduard Khachiyan on his anniversary wishing him good health and many years of a creative and fruitful life. We also extend our gratitude to the Professor for being able to dedicate his time to students, contributing to their education and development.
