THE NEW ORNAMENTS OF THE CAPITAL

Last year, new, thematic monuments, dedicated to the 2800th anniversary of Yerevan, were added to the capital. Among them were the monuments of the lecturer of the Armenian National University of Architecture and Construction, Honored Architect of Armenia, Professor Tigran Barseghyan.

The first memorial, created under the inspiration of the lines of Sevak’s poetry, found its symbolic place near the museum “Erebouni”. The composition of the Artashesian triangular stones defending and marking the borders of the Armenian state, is the basis of the work made in golden tufa Ani, having 9 meters high, created by Tigran Barseghyan and young architects of our university Mher Azizyan and Narek Barseghyan. The laurel branch, which stands from the memorial, symbolizes the 28-year history of Yerevan, and the flower on the branch is the symbol of 12 administrative districts of Yerevan.

Tigran Barseghyan’s other thought flight is a unique stone trip to the historic capitals. On the travertine slabs of the 5.2 meter square monument looking at Mount Ararat the names of all 12 capitals, dates and symbols are marked. The source-monument represents the Tree of Life, which grows from the bottom symbolizing the Armenian state, and the other three sources symbolize the cohesion of Armenia, Artsakh and the Armenian Diaspora. It should be noted that this is the only memorial implemented among the projects presented to the Artistic Council of the Yerevan Municipality.

And, finally, the 3rd, basalt stone monument is placed in the garden of Artsakh freedom fighter Arthur Karapetyan. It looks like a rod of life that has torn the bowels of the ground and stands up to the light, the traditional guardian dragons on both sides, which had their individual place in Armenian ornamentation in the period before Christianity.

It is said that monuments and memorials are silent witnesses of stone. And their presence makes history speak and protects it from the destructive dust of time.
