HERITAGE PRESERVATION PROGRAM IN GAVAR WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE ERASMUS+ PROGRAMME

Within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme, four lecturers from the Polytechnic University of Milan, who were already well acquainted with Armenia and the challenges related to the preservation of its heritage, visited Yerevan. 11 students from the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia and 5 students from Gavar State University participated in the Program.

The main aim of the Program  was to study and identify the issues related to the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of Gavar. In the case of Gavar the situation is unique: not a single civil building is registered in the list of state monuments. Only archaeological monuments from the ancient period and religious structures such as churches are  registered. At the same time, Gavar is also rich in civil architectural heritage. The history of the city begins in the first quarter of the 19th century, after the foundation of New Bayazet, when those who moved from Bayazet after the Russian-Turkish war founded a new settlement. Valuable structures have been preserved from that period, which, due to their historical and architectural significance, deserve proper assessment, preservation and sustainable development.

Gavar Municipality enthusiastically joined the initiative and supported the activities. A reception was organized at the Municipality, and the local TV company produced a report about the Event.

Within the framework of the Program, lectures were delivered on current issues of heritage preservation. In the following days, the students were divided into four groups: the first group tried to demarcate and outline the boundaries of the historic center, the second group developed proposals for improving accessibility and connections in the historic center, the third group presented ideas for the future use of abandoned structures, and the fourth group developed plans on how to restore valuable residential buildings, preserving their historical value and at the same time adapting them to modern requirements so that residents can continue to live in their homes.

The students presented their proposals in the form of projects. The active involvement of the community – students of Gavar University, the Municipility, as well as the local architect – was of particular importance, as the real preservers of the heritage are the community, especially the youth.

At the end of the Program, all participants received certificates.

This initiative once again attached importance to international cooperation: such programs not only contribute to the professional development of young people, but also promote the recognition and preservation of the cultural heritage of Armenia, combining international experience and local capabilities.
