NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTRUCTION OF ARMENIA
University with a 100-Year History
On August 4, Sergey Hambardzumyan, the academician of the NAS RA, a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, one of the founders of the Armenian Mechanics School, state and public figure, passed away.
The scientist was 97 years old.
The first works of Sergey Hambardzumyan had attracted the attention of the world’s scientific community, being the basis for the international recognition of the Armenian Mechanics School. Academician Ambartsumian’s main research area is the mechanics of deformable solid body, where he is one of the founders of a number of scientific directions. He had developed a theory of anisotropic sheared membranes, on the basis of which the critical problems of calculating and designing flying devices and veneer structures have been solved. Sergey Hambardzumyan proposed adjusted theory of plates and membranes, which helped to consider the problem of calculation of thin layers of contemporary composite materials from the new perspective and to promote theoretical deep researches. The first time Academician Ambartsumian and his students developed the theory of magnetic resonance in thin bodies. The results obtained by Sergey Hambardzumyan in the fields of non-linear, thermal and other extremely important problems of the deformed body are fundamentally important. Sergey Hambardzumyan taught at Yerevan Polytechnic Institute and Yerevan State University. Under his supervision, more than 50 young scientists have defended their doctoral and candidate’s thesis.1977-1991 Sergey Hambardzumyan was the rector of Yerevan State University. Sergey Hambardzumyan had a great role in the social life of Armenia.
1975-1980 being a deputy and president of the Supreme Council of Armenia, and from 1979 to 1992 – deputy of the Supreme Council of USSR, since 1989 – member of the Presidency of the Supreme Council of the USSR, he always defended Armenia’s interests.
Academician Sergey Hambardzumyan’s merit is highly appreciated.
He was awarded Orders of Lenin, Red Banner of Labor, Sergey Vavilov, The October Revolution, Medal of Honor by the USSR government. He was awarded Orders of Saint Sahak and Saint Mesrop, Yan Kamsensky, ” The Medal of Merit in Work”, ‘Peace Fighter’, ‘Friendship’, Yerevan State University, University of Montpellier, International Academy of Engineering.
By the decree of the President of the Russian Federation, Sergey Hambardzumyan was awarded the “Peoples’ Friendship” order and by the decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia, “Tigran the Great” order.
The honest and bright image of the well-known statesman, scientist and citizen will always remain in the memory of the generations.
Sergei Hambardzumyan’s funeral is on 6 August 2018 at 6:00pm at the St. John Church in Kond, Yerevan and the burial ceremony is on 7 August 2018, at 2:00pm, from the RA National Academy of Sciences.
