FACULTY OF CONSTRUCTION

The Faculty of Construction is one of NUACA key Faculties. In 1921-1930, the Technical Faculty of Yerevan State University, from which the specialty of construction originates, in particular the engineering and construction, was headed by Deans David Zavrikyan (1921-1922), Grigor Shirmazanyan (1922-1923), Zebet Khojanetyan (from January to September 1924), Nikoghayos Buniatyan (1924-1925), Arshak Tonyan (1925-1929) and Hovhannes Navakatikyan (1929-1930).

On July 16, 1930, Mikayel Mazmanyan was appointed Director of the Construction Institute. From January 1931, Harutyun Zakyan was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Construction, Ashot Melikjanyan was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Hydrotechnical Engineering (1938), and from 1933, the Faculty of Construction operated on the basis of the base it had created as part of the Polytechnic Institute. In the following years, from 1932 to 1937, Nikolay Vlasyan, Yeghishe Hambardzumyan, Gurgen Oganezov, Harutyun Zakyan and Torgom Khachatryan were appointed Deans of the Faculty of Construction. In the 1936/1937 academic year, the specialty “Hydraulic Engineering” was restored within the Faculty of Construction along with the “Industrial and Civil Engineering” specialty. After the reorganization in 1938, the Dean of the Faculty of Construction Varazdat Harutyunyan was appointed Dean, and Gurgen Ararktsyan was Dean of the Faculty of Hydrotechnical Engineering (1939 and 1943-1944). After the next merger of these two Faculties in November 1939, Avetik Ter-Israelyan, Zaven Gyulkhandanyan, Khachatur Mashinyan, Simon Hovnanyan, Avetik Ter-Israelyan, and Grigor Petrosyan were appointed Deans of the Faculty of Construction. Vagharshak Hovsepyan (1952-1954) and Torgom Khachatryan (1954-1959) worked as Deans of the Faculty of Hydraulic Engineering.

In 1972, the Faculty of Architecture and Construction was re-established on the basis of the Faculty of Construction, which included the specialties of “Architecture”, “Industrial and Civil Engineering”, “Production of Construction Materials and Structures”, “Economics and Organization of Construction”, as well as the Faculty of Civil Engineering, which included the specialties of “Hydraulic Engineering of Hydroelectric Power Plants and Water Structures”, “Heat and Gas Supply and Ventilation, Sewerage and Water Supply, Roads, Bridges, and Tunnels”. Gurgen Abovyan was elected Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Construction, and Martuni Poghosyan was elected Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. From 1980 to 2013, the Faculty was headed by Gurgen Abovyan, Armen Aghalyan, Robert Avetisyan, Hrant Poghosyan, Hrant Khachikyan (1974-1984), Vladimir Hakobyan, Albert Margaryan and  Razmik Petevotyan.

In addition to the above-mentioned faculties, the following also functioned in different years:

– Faculty of Road Construction (Dean – Emmanuel Khudabashyan, 1938),

– Faculty of Evening Construction (Dean – Gevorg Hakobyan, 1956–1977),

– Faculty of Part-time Construction (Dean – Rudolf Yepremyan, 1989–1990, 1996–2013),

– Faculty of Construction Technology (Dean – Albert Asiryan, 1993–2010),

– Faculty of Transport Construction (Dean – Robert Azoyan, 1993–2011).

In 2013, all construction specialties were united in the general Department of Construction, currently the Faculty of Construction, Dean of which was Petros Hambardzumyan, and from 2017 to 2021 Davit Grigoryan. Since 2020, the Faculty has been headed by Aram Sahakyan.

The Faculty of Civil Engineering includes the following specialties (academic programmes):

Undergraduate programme:

  • Modeling, Design and Construction of Buildings and Structures
  • Modeling, Design and Management of Engineering Systems

Currently, the Faculty includes the following Chairs with their laboratories:

Since 1921, the number of graduates of the Faculty of Construction has exceeded 2000. Graduates of the Faculty of Construction actively participate in the large-scale design, construction and operation of reservoirs, water pipelines, dams, metro, bridges and tunnels, roads, civil and industrial buildings, hydroelectric power plants, thermal power plants, nuclear power plants and other unique structures not only in Armenia, but also abroad. Graduates of the Faculty hold leadership positions in scientific research, design, construction organizations, ministries, have high scientific titles of associate professor, professor, are full members of the national academies of sciences of Armenia and other countries, as well as members of creative and professional unions.

The Faculty of Construction has created the most favorable conditions for training highly qualified specialists. Guided by the principle of providing design-based education, the following computer programs are included in the specialties of the Faculty: AutoCAD, Python, Geoslop, Civil 3D, BIM, LIRA-SABR, Zulu GIS, Zulu Hidro, Zulu Hidro, EPANET, etc.
