Chair of Drawing and Computer Graphics

The chair of “Drawing Geometry and Drawing” was founded in 1938 which was headed by the ASSR Honored Worker of Science and Technology M. Varuntcyan until 1956. Then he was followed by candidate of technical sciences, associate professor S. Hayrapetyan from 1956 to 1969 and by candidate of technical sciences, associate professor H. Babayan from 1969 to 1991.

The renamed chair of “Drawing Geometry, Engineering and Mechanical Graphics” which was created in 1989 and included in Yerevan Institute of Architecture and Construction was headed by candidate of technical sciences, associate professor S. Torosyan and from 1996 to January 2007 the head of chair was candidate of technical sciences, associate professor M. Kareyan.

In 2006 in the frames of university reform programs the following chairs were formed on the basis of the chair of “Drawing Geometry, Engineering and Mechanical Graphics”: chair of “Drawing and Painting” (2006-2008), chair of “Drawing, Computer Graphics and Design” (2008-2010) and chair of “Drawing and Computer Graphics” since 2010. From 2007 to present the chair is headed by candidate of technical sciences, professor M.Z.Poghosyan.

Today the chair being equipped with computer auditoriums review the content of the subjects taught in order to provide future specialists with relevant knowledge meeting the requirements of modern labor market.

The chair serves the students of all faculties of the university teaching drawing, drawing geometry and subjects near to computer graphics. Despite the training programs are general for the university, they contain some distinctions taking into consideration the existing specialties in the University.

High qualification and scientific-pedagogical experience of teaching staff allowed to update the subject programs, fund of instructional and methodical manuals, etc. in short period of time.

The ability to create graphical images is one of the oldest and valuable achievements of humanity. Simple graphical images were used by people as a means of communication even in ancient times. Over time, the possibilities and practical aspects of information graphical method were expanded multiple times and today they have a special role in practical life of people.

Currently, when the electronic revolution has penetrated into all spheres of human activity, the computers are also widely used in the field of constructive activities and particularly in the field of design. In these circumstances, new skills of graphical language proficiency are required from designer, architecture, civil engineer which serves as a basis for creating new programs for subjects that are taught in the chair.

Design orientation of the chair is outlined in the general trend of modern architecture and design, i.e. to maximally open space and to make harmonious for people in terms of aesthetics.
