For the students specializing in Architecture teaching drawing is of great value for their aesthetic training and education initiated since the very first days of opening of this profession in 1950. Later on teaching painting and sculpture was also involved in the programme. Since 2007 all these subjects are taught also to the students specializing in Computer Design and Fine Arts.
Subjects taught in the Chair include drawing, painting, composition, sculpture, color vision, far-sighted drawing and plastic anatomy.
Numerous distinguished people, national artists and pedagogues of former USSR contributed to the establishment and development of the Chair among them Yervand Qochar, Hakob Kojoyan, Stepan Aghajanyan, Henrik Mamyan, Babken Qolozyan, Anatoli Papyan, Levon Manaseryan, Vaghinak Aslanyan, Vehik Ter-Grigoryan, Onik Sargsyan, Anya Paronyan, Evrik Mkrtchyan, Hakob Zhamagortsyan, Hovhannes (Onik) Poghosyan, Vladimir Minasyan, Vanik Kazhoyan, Rafael Sargsyan, Razmik Ghazaryan, Albert Sokhikyan, Yelena Ter-Avagyan, Spartak Safaryan and others. In 1975 the Chair was separated from the Chair of Architecture. The new Chair had new opportunities to organize the educational process even more effectively. Levon Manaseryan was the founding head of the Chair (graduated from Yerevan Fine Arts Institute in 1953, associate professor since 1983 and professor since 2006) from 1975 to 1991.
The teaching load for drawing and painting studies was increased with some modifications for the specialties in Architecture and Design as well as faculty of Computer Design. The head of Chair was national artists Henrik Mamyan (1991-2006). During 2006-2007 the Chair of Painting was united with the Chair of Drawing but later on separating from each other the newly created Chair was known as the Chair of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. The faculty of the Chair enjoys trust and sympathy of their students.
The Chair is properly equipped with auditoriums and 3 workshops that are properly furnished and meet modern requirements. The University has supporting colleges and a school where “Architecture and Design” are priority subjects. The Chair has children’s art studio where liberty of reasoning is encouraged together with academic knowledge. The Chair staff attended and attends various forums, art exhibitions, biennales and award ceremonies frequently returning to homeland with numerous prizes. Almost every year reputable artists of the Chair organize personal exhibitions in different countries and halls. The graduates of the Chair are also famous architects, artists, musicians as well as state and government officials.
