NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTRUCTION OF ARMENIA

October, 1921- Technical Faculty, the very first training center for architects and constructors in the country, with specialties in Architectural Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering and 38 students, opened at the newly established University of Yerevan. In the 1920s the process of staff training of Technical Faculty was aimed at solving up-to-date socio-economic problems. The invited lecturers in the newly established Faculty were the Armenian intelligentsia closely acquainted with Russian and European cultures, among them architects Alexander Tamanyan, Hovhannes Kajaznuni, Nikoghayos Buniatyan, hydrobuilder Grigor Shirmazanyan, a number of famous scientists and lecturers, among them Alexander Hakobyan, Harutyun Zakyan, Hovhannes Navakatikyan, Zebet Khojanetyan, Arshak Tonyan, Levon Manucharyan, Levon Rotinyan, Kiryak Zavriev, Gurgen Oganezov, Ashot Ter-Mkrtchyan, Mikayel Varuntsyan, Andrey Gasparyan, Tigran Jrbashyan, Freidon Aghalyan, Hakob Kojoyan, Mikayel Mazmanyan and Ara Sargsyan.

For 100 years of its existence, the educational institution of Architecture and Construction has prepared more than 30,000 professionals who have shaped the new lineament of our Homeland.

1927- Architectural Engineering specialty was renamed “Civil Construction”, and Hydraulic Engineering – “Construction of Roads and Hydraulic Structures”.

1928- The Technical Faculty gave its first seven graduates. In 1928-1930 the first graduates of the Technical Faculty had a wide range of work opportunities. They all became devotees of the establishment of the new Armenian architecture and construction art, laying solid foundations for new Armenia.

1930- The Construction Institute of the Armenian SSR was established on the basis of the Technical Faculty, and Mikayel Mazmanyan became the very first Director of the Institute.

1931-1932-  The Institute had 465 students, 63% of whom were provided scholarships.

1931- The Faculty of Hydraulic Engineering was closed.

1933- Yerevan Polytechnic Institute, with its two faculties – Construction and Chemical-Technology, was founded by merging the Construction and Chemistry-Technology institutes of the Armenian SSR. On the occasion of the 50^th anniversary of K. Marx’s death, the Institute was named after him. Mikayel Mazmanyan was appointed Director of the Institute.

1936- Hamazasp Ghantaghchyan, an engineer-architect, was appointed Director of the Institute.

1937- Ashot Melikjanyan, a hydraulic engineer, was appointed Director of the Institute.

1937- The training of engineer-architects in the Institute came to a halt, and resumed in the 1943-1944 academic year.

1937- The Institute gave the first graduates in Construction Economics.

1938- The Faculty of Construction was divided into two independent faculties – Construction and Hydraulic Engineering, which were remerged in 1939 and the Construction Faculty was established with two specialties: “Industrial and Civil Construction” and “Hydraulic Engineering Construction”.

1939- Two specialties were formed at the Faculty of Construction: “Industrial and Civil Construction” and “Hydraulic Engineering Construction”.

1941- From the very first days of the Great Patriotic War, half of the Institute lecturers and students went to the front.

1943-1944- Due to the increase in number of students, the Faculty of Construction was divided into Faculties of Construction and Hydraulic Engineering.

1944- The first Defense of PhD Dissertations in Construction took place in the Institute (dissertation defenders: lecturers Velikhan Valesyan, Vagharshak Hovsepyan).

1946- Petros Melkonyan, engineer-constructor, was appointed Rector of the Institute.

September, 1949- “Heat and Gas Supply and Ventilation” specialty was established in the Faculty of Construction.

1949- The admission to the Architecture specialty was halted and resumed in the 1951-1952 academic year.

1953- Part-time education system was established in the General Technical Faculty, and in 1956 Evening and Part-Time Faculties were established on the basis of the same Faculty.

1955- “Water Supply and Sewerage” specialty was opened.

September 1, 1955– The central building of the new complex, designed by architect Artashes Mamijanyan, was put into operation.

1956- “Water Supply and Drainage” specialty was opened in the Faculty of Construction.

1957- The Faculty of Hydraulic Engineering of the Institute was dissolved, transferring its specialties to the Faculty of Construction.

1959- There were 6 specialties in the Faculty of Construction: “Industrial and Civil Construction”, “Architecture”, “Hydraulic Engineering Construction”, “Automobile Roads”, “Water Supply and Sewerage”, “Heat and Gas Supply”.

1960-1961- “Industrial and Civil Construction” specialty was opened in Kirovakan branch.

1961- The Construction Technical School operating on the public basis was established.

1962- The “Building Constructions and Structures” specialty was opened.

1965- Ashot Aslanyan was appointed Rector of the Institute.

September, 1967- “Construction Economics and Organization” specialty was opened.

1968- A Faculty of Construction was established in Kirovakan branch, which operated until 1992.

1972- The Professional Council for the Defense of PhD Dissertations in Architecture and Construction started its operation.

1974- The Faculties of Architectural Construction and Construction Engineering were established on the basis of the Faculty of Construction.

1980- Rafael Movsisyan was appointed Rector of the Institute.

1989- By the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Armenian SSR, the Institute of Architecture and Construction was established on the basis of the relevant faculties and chairs of the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute. Arest Beglaryan was appointed Rector.

1990– The Faculties of Construction Technology and Transport were established.

1990- The Scientific Sector was established at the Institute, and most of the staff was involved in the research activities.

1991- The Council for the Defense of PhD Dissertations in Construction was established which was promoted to Doctoral level in 1994.

June, 1991- The Postgraduate Department was established.

1996- YSUAC Basic College was established.

July 7, 2000- By the decision of the RA Government, Yerevan Institute of Architecture and Construction was renamed Yerevan State University of Architecture and Construction.

2006- Hovhannes Tokmajyan was appointed YSUAC Rector.

2007- The Secondary Vocational Education College after A. Tamanyan was merged with the University, becoming one of its units.

2011- The renovated building of the University Basic School after M. Abeghyan was put into operation.

2011- The newly built University building was put into operation.

2011– As a symbol of friendship, a bust of Leonardo da Vinci, donated by the Italian “Romualdo del Bianco” Foundation, was placed in the University yard.

2011- The 20^th International Exhibition “The Best Graduation Papers in Architecture and Design” was organized at YSUAC.

2012- Taron Margaryan, the Mayor of Yerevan, became the Chairman of the University Council, and in 2014, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

2014- Gagik Galstyan, President of the Union of Builders of the Republic of Armenia was elected Rector of Yerevan State University of Architecture and Construction.

January, 2014- Yerevan State University of Architecture and Construction was renamed National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia.

November, 2015- “Preservation of Cultural Heritage in Armenia” program, implemented by National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia was granted the “Europa Nostra” International award.

December, 2015- National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia received European institutional accreditation.

October, 2016- National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia celebrated its 95^th anniversary, attended by the representatives of the Armenian universities, delegates from the CIS countries, guests from the USA, Canada, France, Italy and other countries.

December, 2019- NUACA Board of Trustees elected Yeghiazar Vardanyan, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Acting Rector.

July, 2020- “Real Estate and Construction Management” Master’s academic programme was introduced in the 2019-2020 academic year.

September, 2020- Vlad Asatryan was re-elected Chairman of NUACA Board of Trustees.

November 16, 2020- At the session of the Board of Trustees, Yeghiazar Vardanyan, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor was elected Rector of the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia.

December, 2020- Within the framework of cooperation with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Armenia, the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Yerevan and National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia, the Russian Language Center was established at the University.

January, 2021- A two-day conference entitled “Prospects for the Development of the University” was held.

March,  2021- A Memorandum of Cooperation was concluded between “National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia” Foundation and the “South Caucasus Railway” CJSC at the University, as a result of which “Construction of Railways, Track and Track Facilities” academic programme was reopened in the undergraduate studies of the Faculty of Construction.

September, 2021- The Road Construction Testing Laboratory was solemnly opened at National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia (NUACA) within the framework of the World Bank “SHINLAB” grant program.

October, 2021- Susanna Hakobyan, a student of the Faculty of Urban Economy and Ecology, was elected President of the Student Council.

October, 2021- An international conference entitled “Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage as a Means of Effective Dialogue among States” was held at NUACA,  with the participation of 65 architect-scientists from Russia, Kazakhstan, Belgium, Italy, Spain, France and a number of other countries.

November, 2021- The first issue of the international electronic “Journal of Architectural and Engineering Research” (ISSN 2738-2656) was published.

December, 2021- Harutyun Ghasabyan was re-elected Chairman of the NUACA Trade Union.

December, 2021- In the finals of the XIII International Olympiad “IT-Planet 2020/21” in the field of Information Technologies, Slavik Kaytsakov, a fourth-year student at the Faculty  of Management and Technology, took second place among 17,500 participants.

January, 2022- Armen Ghularyan, Chairman of the Urban Development Committee, was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Khachatur Khachatryan, NUACA PhD applicant, was elected the Secretary.
